Federal Election Campaign: Day 6

Day 6 of the election campaign and the LNP is already preparing for defeat with Tony Abbott raising the possibility that he would return to the Liberal Party leadership if the party asked him after the election. Given the popularity of Tony Abbott, I raise the possibility that this is a weird psy-op to get people to vote for ScuMo so we don't have to put up with Abbott.

This said, Tony Abbott's facing another issue with "Advance Australia", a conservative activist group, which was trying to use their attempted parody "Captain GetUp!" in his favour. The manner they thought appropriate was to dry-hump a poster of his independent opponent. Classy.

Still, Abbott is no stranger to some of the most disturbing attitudes to women. The following quote is quite notorious:

"I think there does need to be give and take on both sides, and this idea that sex is kind of a woman’s right to absolutely withhold, just as the idea that sex is a man’s right to demand I think they are both they both need to be moderated, so to speak."
Tony Abbott, Panel discussion "Religion, Sex and Politics" on, March 19, 2009.

There's a word for "moderating" the right of women to say "no" to sex, Tony. Do you know what that is?

Showing sensitivity in advance to the electorate, Liberal candidate for Adelaide, Shaun Osborn, invited ten thousand voters to a cafe to an election forum at an Adelaide cafe — without warning the business. Who were understandably not happy about not be consulted, but in glorious Italian coalition-building style - invited all the other candidates to come along.

Meanwhile still on the health policy drive Labor has offered free specialist consultations to cancer patients. Certainly not all consultations however, and not entirely free. Basically, it's expanding a Medicare rebate with bulk-billing. Greg Hunt apparently thought it meant every single cancer-related item on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) - but has gone quiet after the error was pointed out by Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen and Grattan Institute health program director Stephen Duckett.

It will be fascinating to see what the rabble provides on day 7.
