Words are everything in political debate. They mould attitudes and create social and political movements. When the word refugee becomes synonymous with political terrorism and the movement led by Pauline Hanson calls itself One Nation, you know things aren’t what they seem to be. The great majority of political refugees are trying to get away from political terrorists while the policies that are thrown into the political arena by One Nation are a recipe for a divided nation.
Hanson’s Divided Nation party feeds on disillusionment with the economic and political process. Divided Nation is a master at targeting “the other”. Over the past 20 years the other has rotated from Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders to Asians and now to Muslims. The tactic of blaming the other for all our problems is nothing new. The Nazis rode into power on an anti-Jewish bandwagon. It was easy to target a group of people who wore different clothes and practised a different religion for the German people’s woes.
The final solution, a political solution was based on the premise Germans would accept the physical liquidation of the Jews because they believed they were personally responsible for the problems experienced by the German people. Germany wasn’t some backward nation in the 1920’s and 30’s despite economic hardships and the death of over a million German soldiers during World War One. Germany was a sophisticated civilised community, not some backward, redneck society.
The antidote to the creation of a divided nation is dependent on the creation of inclusive political and social movements. It is no accident membership of Public Interests Before Corporate Interests (PIBCI) is based on creating a united, not divided, nation.
“Membership is open to people of all religious beliefs and those who have no religious beliefs. We welcome people of all races, nationalities, genders and sexual orientation. We believe all human beings are born with inalienable rights and liberties no government can legislate away or corporations take away.”
PIBCI is the antidote to Hansons, Bernadis, Australia First, Rise Up Australia and the plethora of political parties who have made their political fortunes by dividing Australians on the basis of religion, nationality, race, language, gender and sexual orientation.
As Secretary / Convenor of PIBCI I encourage you to JOIN US in the struggle to create a united nation that uses electoral politics, non-violent direct action and community boycotts to put the interests of the public as a whole before corporate interests.
