O'Brien V One Nation

As many of you already know, I've recently committed to running as a Senate candidate for Victoria at the next Federal election.

How did that happen?
Last week newly elected One Nation Senator for NSW, Brian Burston delivered his maiden speech to Parliament. During the speech Burston made a number of incredulous claims including lamenting that we never hear about the First Fleet. So I wrote him a response:

To his credit Brian got back to me, and things kind of escalated from there:

8,217 Victorians can put Brian Burston in a loincloth.

But it's about more than making a One Nation Senator look even sillier. This is about proving that for all the support One Nation, the so called “patriots” groups, Bernardi, Abetz and all the other bigots have, there are a lot more people who are fed up with them.

Racism, misogyny, homophobia, hatred in general, belongs in the gutter, not in our Parliament. I believe that, and I believe most Australians do to.

It's also about having some fun and not taking ourselves too seriously. Because that's what living in Australia is meant to be about.

I'm starting out with no party, no money and no slogans, but I think I have the bigger constituency. It's going to be an interesting ride.
